A MacBook Pro skin or MacBook Air skin changes the one surface everyone sees: the lid. Most skins are printed vinyl. Ours is different – a veneer of genuine slate, about 1 mm thin, that you apply directly to the aluminium. This guide explains what a stone MacBook skin is, which models it fits, how to put it on and what happens if you want it off again.
Skin or hard-shell case: what is the difference?
A hard-shell case clips around the lid and the base of your MacBook. It adds bulk at the edges, changes how the laptop feels on your lap and can trap dust between plastic and aluminium. A skin works differently: it sits only on the lid and lies flat against it. The silhouette of your MacBook stays the same, and the hinge and ports are left untouched.
What a skin does: it protects the lid from scratches and gives it a surface you can feel. What it does not do: it is not drop protection for the whole device. If that is your main concern, a skin is the wrong tool.
Real slate versus vinyl that only looks like stone
Search for a stone MacBook skin and most of what you find is vinyl film with a photo of marble or slate printed on it. From a distance it looks like stone; under your hand it feels like plastic. Every copy is identical, because it is the same image.
A real slate laptop skin is the stone itself. We split the slate wafer-thin and set it on a flexible carrier layer, so it follows the lid without being brittle like porcelain. The result:
- Texture you can feel: matte, finely layered, pleasant under your palms.
- No repeating pattern: every piece is one of a kind. The photos show an example – the grain and colour flow of your veneer will be different.
- A record of the stone: each skin comes with a Stone Passport with its own number, the origin of the stone and 12 months of breakage cover from delivery, in addition to the statutory warranty.
There are two stones for the MacBook. The Slate Skin Black Rock is deep black and matte; it absorbs light rather than reflecting it. The Slate Skin Transocean shows blues and grey-greens in soft waves, with pale lines between them like whitecaps – not a print, but the stone itself. Both are made by hand in Germany.
Which MacBook models fit?
The skin is cut to the exact lid of each model, so you choose your model when you order. It is currently available for:
- MacBook Air 13": M1, M2, M3, M4, M5
- MacBook Air 15": M2, M3, M4, M5
- MacBook Pro 13": M1, M2
- MacBook Pro 14": M1 Pro/Max, M2 Pro/Max, M3, M3 Pro/Max, M4, M4 Pro/Max, M5, M5 Pro/Max, M6
- MacBook Pro 16": M1 Pro/Max, M2 Pro/Max, M3 Pro/Max, M4 Pro/Max, M5 Pro/Max
Note that on the 14-inch MacBook Pro, the base-chip versions and the Pro or Max versions are separate options. Pick the one that matches your machine exactly.
How to find your model
- Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen and choose About This Mac. It shows the model name, screen size and chip.
- Or use our Device Finder: select your device once and the shop shows you what fits it.
If you are torn between two options, check About This Mac before ordering. The skins are cut per model – a 13-inch skin will not fit a 14-inch lid.
How to apply a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro skin
The skin holds with a special adhesive. You need no tools, just a few calm minutes.
- 1. Clean the lid: shut down the MacBook, close it and wipe the lid with a soft cloth until it is free of dust, grease and fingerprints. Let it dry completely.
- 2. Lay it on dry first: place the skin on the lid with the backing still attached. Check its position against the edges and note where it should sit.
- 3. Peel off the backing: remove the protective film from the adhesive side without touching the adhesive with your fingers.
- 4. Start at one edge: line up one edge with the lid and lower the skin onto the aluminium from there.
- 5. Press down evenly: smooth it with flat hands from the centre outwards until the skin lies flat everywhere.
Can a slate MacBook skin be removed?
The skin is designed to stay on. It is meant to be the new surface of your lid, not an accessory you swap every week. It is not permanent, though: thanks to the special adhesive it comes off without leaving residue, and the aluminium underneath stays as it was. Worth knowing if you sell your MacBook one day or hand it back to an employer. If you have questions before taking it off, just write to us.
The desk set: iPad skin and stand
If your MacBook wears slate, the iPad next to it can too. The iPad Slate Skin Black Rock lies on the back of the iPad without adding bulk; camera and ports stay clear. And the Slate Fusion Stand Black Rock holds a MacBook, an iPad and a third device upright, flanked by two elements of the same slate on black anodised aluminium, with silicone padding in every slot. Together they make a calm, matte desk. Everything for laptop and tablet is in the MacBook & iPad collection.
