The story

Amazonite bears the name of the world’s greatest river, yet it does not occur on the Amazon at all. Most likely a mix-up by early explorers, but the name stuck. In ancient Egypt it was carved into amulets and scarabs, and amazonite lies in Tutankhamun’s burial treasure too.

It owes its turquoise to tiny traces of lead and water in its crystal lattice, a colour hardly any other stone shows. Pale, finely dashed streaks run through the green, formed as the crystal slowly cooled, along with golden-brown veins like sunlight on shallow water. Every veneer shows a different lagoon.
