Your unique piece in detail

Quartzite is not marble: it forms when sandstone fuses under heat and pressure into one of the hardest natural stones. Black Venom is a black quartzite from Brazil, run through with light veins. At first glance it recalls Nero Marquina – but that is a marble. The grain is different too: quartzite is made of tightly fused quartz grains and looks almost glassy when polished, marble of softer calcite crystals. Black Venom is denser, more scratch-resistant and less sensitive to acids. It sits polished on the back of the Pro case. Everything around it is built for daily life: the lens ring and buttons are CNC-milled aluminium. The lens ring stands slightly proud, so your iPhone never rests on its camera. The metal buttons press easily and can be swapped, and the Camera Control sits protected under TPU in the frame colour.

Every piece is one of a kind. The photos show an example – the veining on your veneer will run differently.

Stone & origin

Black Venom was once sand. Quartz-rich sandstone was carried deep into the earth, under so much heat and pressure that its grains recrystallised and locked into one another. Loose rock became a dense, almost glassy stone: quartzite.

At around 7 on the Mohs scale it is harder than most granites and far harder than marble. The black is the ground; the light veins are minerals that settled in fine cracks.

The stone comes from Brazil and is quarried only in small quantities. In the trade it is often simply called Venom. Large slabs of it clad kitchen islands and entire walls.

On the case, such a slab becomes a piece that exists only once: we split it to around one millimetre and polish it until the grain begins to shine.

Case vs. Pro
Case
Real natural stone with a Black Frosted case. Without the aluminium buttons, aluminium lens ring or additional air cushions of the Pro version.
Case Pro
Real natural stone with a satin-finish TPU case in several colours. CNC-machined aluminium buttons and an aluminium lens ring, anodised in matching or contrasting colours. Integrated air cushions provide extra impact protection.

The same commitment to real natural stone. The difference is in the case, the details and the added protection.

Mix & Match
Aluminium buttons and a lens ring in your favourite colour: matching or contrasting. Buy them separately, swap them out and give your Pro Case a new look.

The story behind Black Venom

Sand turned black

I

Before, there was sand

It all begins as sand. Quartz grains laid down in a sea or riverbed that vanished long ago. Layer upon layer, until it becomes sandstone. Soft, porous, unremarkable. Nothing you would put near a wrist or a phone yet.

II

Pressure

Then the Earth bears down. The sandstone sinks deep into the crust, under heat and load of the kind only colliding continents produce. The grains dissolve and grow back, interlocked, without a single pore between them. Break this stone and it breaks straight through the grains. That is quartzite.

III

Black

Pure quartzite would be white. Black Venom is deep black, and no one has studied exactly why. In other black quartz rocks it is the finest carbon particles, trapped between the crystals. The white veins run through the stone like cracks in lacquer, sharp and irregular.

IV

Minas Gerais

The stone comes from Minas Gerais, the state that made Brazil the biggest quartzite country in the world. Around a hundred varieties leave here for the trade. Venom is one of the newest. The exporter lists it among its new releases.

V

Wire and stone

Quartzite is too hard for chisels and explosives. The blocks are cut out of the wall with diamond wire, cut by cut, tonnes at a time. Only this technique made the stone viable. Then it travels to Espírito Santo, where the blocks are sawn into slabs. Almost 80 percent of Brazil’s natural stone leaves the country through the ports there.

VI

Hardness 7

On the Mohs scale, Black Venom sits at about 7. Harder than granite, far harder than marble, and it barely absorbs water. That is why it ends up in kitchens, on walls, around fireplaces. And why it takes what a phone goes through every day: keys, table edges, pockets.

VII

Tenths of a millimetre

In the workshop we split the slab into veneers so thin they hug the case. Because the white veins never run the same way, no two pieces are alike. That is why you choose yours yourself. Piece by piece, with a photo.
