Your unique piece in detail

A piece of ocean floor from the Alps – the same stone clads columns at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Verde Alpi is a deep green stone from the Aosta Valley, run through with light, almost white veins. Geologically it is a serpentinite – rock from the Earth’s mantle, pushed up as the Alps were folded – and it is traded as marble. It sits polished on the back of the Pro case. Everything around it is built for daily life: the lens ring and buttons are CNC-milled aluminium. The lens ring stands slightly proud, so your iPhone never rests on its camera. The metal buttons press easily and can be swapped, and the Camera Control sits protected under TPU in the frame colour.

Every piece is one of a kind. The photos show an example – the veining on your veneer will run differently.

Stone & origin

Verde Alpi was once ocean floor – the bed of an ancient sea between Africa and Europe. As the Alps folded, it was pushed upwards, all the way into the Aosta Valley. The light veins are calcite: water circulated through the finest cracks and left the white in the deep green.

In 1922 Andrea Mascardi looked out of a train window three kilometres before Chambave and saw a blue-green block on the slope. A few days later he came back with hammer and pick. Today the varieties bear the names of the places where they are quarried: Issogne, Saint-Denis, Issorie.

From the Aosta Valley the stone went out into the world – to Japan, the Emirates, Las Vegas. In New York it clads columns in the entrance hall of the United Nations Secretariat.

Finely polished, it looks like mossy rock after the rain. The stone comes from Antolini in Verona.

The story behind Verde Alpi

An ocean, folded into stone

An Alpine valley at blue hour

The floor of an ancient ocean

I

An ocean that vanished

Around 160 million years ago, in the Jurassic, an ocean lay between Europe and Africa. On its floor, rock from the Earth’s mantle came to the surface. Seawater seeped in and turned it into serpentinite. When Africa pushed north, the ocean closed and its floor was folded into the Alps. Verde Alpi is a piece of it.

II

Green from inside the Earth

The green comes from serpentine minerals and chlorite, the deep dark from fine magnetite. The pale veins are calcite: water ran through the finest cracks and left white behind in the green. Geologists call this rock ophicalcite. The trade calls it marble, even though strictly speaking it isn’t.

III

A valley of quarries

The stone is quarried in the middle and lower Aosta Valley, on the slopes of Issogne, Saint-Denis and Verrayes and in the Gressoney valley. Each variety carries the name of its place: Verde Aver after the Becca d’Aver, Verde Saint-Denis, Verde Issogne. “Verde Alpi”, the green of the Alps, is the name for all of them.

IV

1922

For a long time the green lay almost untouched inside the mountain. In 1922 Andrea Mascardi discovered the stone in the Aosta Valley, yet until the 1930s little was quarried. The great boom came after the Second World War, the peak in the 1960s.

V

Green for modernism

In Milan in the mid-1930s, Piero Portaluppi set green Alpine stones such as Verde Issorie into the Casa Corbellini-Wassermann. In New York, the columns in the lobby of the UN Secretariat are clad in green Italian marble, Verde Alpi according to the stone trade. Today the stone travels from the Aosta Valley as far as Japan and the Emirates.

VI

From the slab

Our Verde Alpi arrives as a large raw slab from Antolini in Verona. Every slab shows a different piece of ocean floor: here a dense web of veins, there calm, almost black fields. From it we split veneers just a few tenths of a millimetre thin.

VII

No two veneers alike

Polished, Verde Alpi looks like mossy rock after rain. Because the veins never run the same way, no veneer matches another. That is why you choose yours yourself, piece by piece, by photo.

A piece of the Alps in your hand

What was once ocean floor became mountain, then slab, then veneer. Set into the Pro case with aluminium buttons and a raised lens ring, you carry it with you every day. Your piece exists exactly once.
