Slate – for those who like it calm and tactile
Surface: matte and textured, noticeable under your fingers.
Character: understated, from deep black to warm earth tones.
Care: the simplest. Cleaning is enough; slate is never polished.

Marble – for those looking for pattern and shine
Surface: polished, with depth.
Character: expressive, with veins in white, gold or grey and base tones from black to red and green.
Care: calcite is soft and reacts to acid. Marble collects marks over time; a wax polish refreshes it.

Quartzite – for those who want robustness
Surface: polished and dense.
Character: calm and present at the same time.
Care: quartz is considerably harder than calcite and therefore more scratch-resistant. A polish still does no harm when it turns matte.

Lapis Lazuli – for those who want colour
Surface: finely polished.
Character: intense blue with golden specks. The blue comes from the mineral lazurite, the gold specks are pyrite, light patches are calcite.
History: the most famous historical deposit lies in Badakhshan in north-eastern Afghanistan. Ground to powder, lapis produced the pigment ultramarine, for a long time one of the most expensive colourants in painting.
Care: lapis is softer than quartz and sensitive to acid and strong heat. Treat it more like marble.
