A case made of solid stone would be heavy, thick and would break at the first drop. If you want to put real stone on a phone, you have to make it thin – so thin that it becomes light without ceasing to be stone.

The principle

Thin stone veneers are generally made like this: a natural stone slab is bonded on its surface to a backing material, such as glass-fibre fabric and resin. A wafer-thin layer of stone is then peeled off together with the backing.

Important to understand: stability comes from the composite. The stone itself remains brittle; the backing holds it together. How well this works depends on the type of stone. Slate, with its natural cleavage planes, is particularly suitable, but quartzite and marble can also be processed this way.

How we do it

It took almost two years of development before we could produce thin, light stone veneers in the quality we wanted. The details remain our workshop know-how. What we can say:

  • The stone layer of our Pro series is 0.8 to 1.2 millimetres thick. Our skins are around 1 millimetre thin.
  • The thickness varies because natural stone is not a standardised sheet. It follows its own structure.
  • Our cases are made by hand in our workshop in Mönchengladbach.

Why there may be dust after unpacking

Real stone sometimes sheds fine particles after transport. This is normal and not a defect. Gently blow them away before wiping the surface so that no fine scratches occur.

Stone and wireless charging

Natural stone does not conduct electricity and does not shield the charging field the way metal does. Whether a case is suitable for wireless charging still depends on the overall construction. The information on the respective product page is therefore what counts.
