Your unique piece in detail

Deep wine red, white and green veins, polished natural stone: Marble Case Pro · Rosso Levanto turns your iPhone into a personal one-of-a-kind piece. Made individually to order for you, by hand in our workshop in Germany, with aluminium buttons and a raised lens ring for everyday life.

Rosso Levanto comes from Bonassola on the Ligurian Riviera, a few kilometres from the Cinque Terre. Geologically it is an ophicalcite; in the trade it is classed as marble. On the back of your case, the polished surface brings out its veins. Every time you reach for your iPhone, you hold a piece of Italian natural stone in your hand.

The slightly raised lens ring protects the camera when you set your iPhone down. Smooth-action, replaceable aluminium buttons and a Camera Control protected under TPU complete the case.

Every piece is one of a kind. The photos show an example; the veining on your veneer will run its own way.

Stone & origin

Rosso Levanto is quarried near Bonassola on the Ligurian Riviera, a few kilometres from the Cinque Terre. Geologically it is not marble at all but an ophicalcite: weathered deep rock from the sea floor, filled with calcite – hence the wine red, hence the white and green veins. In the Baroque it was the stone for altars and columns, because no other red glows so deep.

Polished, it glows from within. Sourced through Antolini, Verona.

Case vs. Pro
Case
Real natural stone with a Black Frosted case. Without the aluminium buttons, aluminium lens ring or additional air cushions of the Pro version.
Case Pro
Real natural stone with a satin-finish TPU case in several colours. CNC-machined aluminium buttons and an aluminium lens ring, anodised in matching or contrasting colours. Integrated air cushions provide extra impact protection.

The same commitment to real natural stone. The difference is in the case, the details and the added protection.

Mix & Match
Aluminium buttons and a lens ring in your favourite colour: matching or contrasting. Buy them separately, swap them out and give your Pro Case a new look.

The story behind Rosso Levanto

Red from the bottom of the ocean

An ocean floor in the Jurassic

Where crust meets mantle
Where crust meets mantle

I

It starts in the deep

The Jurassic. Between Europe and Africa lies an ocean, and on its floor something lies exposed that no one else ever sees: the Earth’s mantle. The rock tears. Hot, lime-rich water forces its way into every crack. What forms is not marble. It is a scar.

II

Red, green, white

The wine red is iron. Haematite, soaking the rock the way blood soaks cloth. The green is serpentine, a remnant of the mantle. The white is calcite, which sealed the cracks again. Every veneer shows you a fracture and its healing. Geologists say ophicalcite. The trade says marble.

III

The Riviera

Then Africa pushes north, the ocean vanishes, and its floor becomes mountain. Today it rises out of the Ligurian Sea at Levanto, Bonassola and Framura, a few kilometres from the Cinque Terre. Above Bonassola, on the quarry walls of Reggimonti, the boundary between crust and mantle lies in plain view. A fossil Moho. The Liguria region lists it as a geosite; there is hardly anything like it in the world.

IV

Levers, tallow and the sea

As early as 1191, men from Passano near Levanto are selling “red stones”. They free the blocks with levers and iron bars and roll them down to the shore on tallow-greased logs. The ship to Genoa is waiting. There, in the 14th century, workshops carve holy water fonts from the red stone, and according to the mineralogist Mario Galli the columns of San Lorenzo Cathedral stand on Levanto. The quarry at Punta dei Marmi is still called Cava delle Colonne. The column quarry.

Across the Atlantic

In 1895 the Boston Public Library opens. The doors of its grandest hall, today the Abbey Room, are framed by columns of red-and-green Levanto. In 1949 Washington rebuilds the Senate Chamber in the Capitol. The new pilasters: red Levanto marble. A stone from a Ligurian fishing village, in the most powerful room in the world.

VI

Rare now

The heyday lasts into the 1930s. Then it goes quiet. Of the four quarries at Reggimonti, three are abandoned today; the last opens only when someone truly needs the stone. Our slab comes via Antolini in Verona. In the workshop we split it into veneers so thin that light passes through. No two are alike. That is why you choose yours yourself. Piece by piece, with a photo.
