The sculptor
Michelangelo Buonarroti, born in Caprese in 1475, saw himself as a sculptor all his life. Even letters from the years he spent painting the most famous ceiling in the world he signed “Michelagniolo, scultore” – Michelangelo, sculptor.

Michelangelo saw himself as a sculptor, not a painter. Even so, around 1511 he painted the image everyone knows on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel: God reaches out his hand, Adam raises his – and between the two index fingers there remains a gap that never closes. With Opus N°1 we take that moment to where Michelangelo liked working best: onto marble.
The hands are UV-printed onto Invisible Grey, a white marble with warm veins of yellow and orange from Antolini’s Exclusive Collection in Verona. Below them goes your signature: the ROXXLYN logo, Michelangelo’s inscription from the Pietà – by tradition the only work he ever signed – or a mark of your own. You choose the colour of the buttons and lens ring freely. Everything is included.
Opus N°1 is made in 100 pieces. Each carries its number in Roman numerals on the Alcantara lining inside, such as XLVII / C. Wish for a number – a birthday, a lucky number, an anniversary. If it is already taken, we draw a free one for you. Once all hundred are gone, this edition will not return.
Every piece is one of a kind. The photos show an example – the veining on your veneer will run differently.

The story behind Opus N°1
The Creation of Adam on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, c. 1511

I
Michelangelo Buonarroti, born in Caprese in 1475, saw himself as a sculptor all his life. Even letters from the years he spent painting the most famous ceiling in the world he signed “Michelagniolo, scultore” – Michelangelo, sculptor.

II
In 1508 Pope Julius II called him to the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Until 1512 he painted there, standing on a scaffold with his head tipped back. In a poem to his friend Giovanni da Pistoia he complained about his aching neck and sketched himself in the margin: contorted, brush raised. The last line: “né io pittore” – I am no painter.

III
God, carried by angels, stretches out his arm. Adam lies on the earth, his finger still hanging limp. Between them remains a gap barely a finger wide – the moment just before life leaps across. This is the detail that Opus N°1 carries.

IV
Michelangelo chose his blocks himself, in the quarries of Carrara. In 1505 he stayed in the mountains for some eight months to do so. He wanted to see the stone before he touched it – its colour, its veins, its flaws.

V
The block for the Pietà came from Carrara too. When it stood in St Peter’s in 1499, Michelangelo heard – so Vasari tells us – visitors crediting it to another sculptor. That night he carved his name into the sash across Mary’s breast: MICHAEL·A·GELUS·BONAROTUS·FLORENT·FACIEBA. It remained the only work he ever signed.

Opus N°1 Creazione
A sculptor painted his most famous image onto a ceiling. Opus N°1 brings it back to where he belonged: onto marble. The hands sit on Invisible Grey from Verona, beneath them a signature – his, ours or yours. And inside, on the Alcantara, a number between I and C that exists only once.
