The Piece in Detail

Lapis lazuli has been the stone of kings and painters for millennia – the ultramarine of the Renaissance was ground from it. For this case we grind and polish a wafer-thin slice of the mineral until the blue glows from within; the golden flecks are pyrite, grown into the stone. No two stones are alike.

The matte black anodised CNC aluminium housing lets the stone do the talking. The AirTag is held magnetically; the grey-plated zinc alloy carabiner attaches the case to keys, bag or suitcase. Made by hand in Mönchengladbach.

Stone & Origin

Lapis lazuli is not marble but a semi-precious stone – a rock of the blue mineral lazurite, flecked with golden pyrite and white calcite. Our lapis comes from Afghanistan, from the mountains of the Hindu Kush, where it has been mined for over 6,000 years: the Egyptians laid it in Tutankhamun’s tomb, and ground lapis became the ultramarine with which Vermeer painted the headscarf of his “Girl with a Pearl Earring” – a pigment then worth more than gold.

We grind and polish it until the blue glows from within. Every slice shows a different distribution of blue, gold and white.

Care

Stone is easy to look after: a drop of Stone Cleaner on a soft cloth and the surface is clean again. Polished stone regains its depth with Marble Polish, while slate stays naturally matte. Care guide
