The Marble: Rosso Levanto
Rosso Levanto belongs to a historically significant natural stone. Its origin lies about 160 million years ago in the Jura. Rosso Levanto was already used in clerical and profane buildings throughout the Mediterranean in the Middle Ages. Inside these buildings, columns, fireplaces, wall cladding, balustrades and steps were designed with it. The stone also found its popularity in handicrafts and sculpture and was used as a vase, bowl and other designed utensils.
Rosso Levanto is a marble mined at Bonassola in Liguria, Italy. The quarry is located about 10 km from La Spezia and is named after Levanto, the last of the five villages of the Cinque Terre, which is right next to Bonassola. Rosso Levanto is structured in its reddish and grey-green ground mass by numerous white and white-grey calcite streaks. The colour of Rosso Levanto varies from purple to blood red and greenish to grey-green. It belongs to one of the rare red serpentinites, which are otherwise green in colour. The red colouring comes from the fact that the iron contained in the original rock has oxidised to hematite.
